Our History

A Legacy of Faith and Vision

Second Baptist Church began with a bold vision: to reach the city of Houston with the Gospel and to preach God's Word without compromise. What started in 1927 as a small gathering of believers has grown into a vibrant, multi-campus church family that spans the city and impacts lives around the world.

  • 121 people were led by God to leave their home church and start a new congregation, meeting at the Taylor School in downtown Houston. Dr. E.P. West, the first pastor, delivered the inaugural message, "For Such a Time As This," setting the tone for years of growth in Worship and Bible Study.

    1927

  • Purchased St. Paul's Methodist Church buildings during the Depression. Twenty men pledged their homes to finance the debt, trusting God's faithfulness.

    1928

  • Purchased land and built the campus at Woodway & Voss. Dr. James Riley, the fourth pastor, led the church in this move west of downtown.

    1957

  • Dr. Ed Young came to Second Baptist Church along with his family, JoBeth, Ed, Ben and Cliff.

    1978

  • Second Baptist Church began a community outreach program known as Angels of Light, designed to bless the less fortunate in our city during the often-difficult Christmas season. Every year since, hundreds of volunteers have served thousands of individuals on each of our campuses, providing a meal, sharing the gospel, and sending them home with new toys, groceries, clothing certificates, and Bibles.

    1990

  • Opened second campus at I-10 & Fry Road to reach West Houston and the greater Katy area. Second Baptist officially became a multi-site church.

    1999

  • 2,003 individuals baptized in a twelve-month period.

    2000

  • Started 11 a.m. contemporary service at Woodway, with Ben Young as preaching pastor.

    2001

  • Merged with Forest Cove Baptist Church in Kingwood, adding a new campus. Craig Reynolds became preaching pastor in 2010.

    2004

  • South Campus launched in Pearland, initially meeting in movie theaters before moving into current facilities in 2010. Cypress Campus launched as the "Willowbrook" location, meeting in theaters until a permanent facility opened in 2016.

    2006

  • Opened sixth campus serving the Katy and Fulshear areas, with Dave Riggle as preaching pastor.

    2015

  • Cypress Campus moved into its permanent facility, led by Stephen Bailiff as preaching pastor.

    2016

  • Second Baptist expanded into a digital platform, creating an online campus.

    2017

  • With a weekly worship attendance of over 32,000, 16,891 adults, youth, and children participated in Vacation Bible School, summer camps, and Beach Retreats. Fifteen volunteer teams led global missions trips.

    2019

  • South Campus transitioned from video to live preaching with Jonathan Gray as preaching pastor.

    2021

  • Dr. Ben Young became Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church.

    2024

From the beginning, Second has been about more than a building—it's been about people. People coming to know Jesus, growing in their faith through worship, walking faithfully with Him, and sharing His love by winning others to Christ.

Each chapter of our history reflects God's faithfulness and the unwavering commitment of those who followed His call. As we look to the future, that same mission still drives us: to worship God, walk with Him daily, and win others to His kingdom.
